Here's another blog from a Milton Chiropractor discussing: Concussions in youth sports. According to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, sports-related concussions account for more than half of all emergency room visits by children aged 8 through 13 in the United States. Since the young brain is more vulnerable to damage from repeated head injuries, a child who suffers a concussion is one and a half times more likely to experience another, so it is very important to be able to recognize the signs to avoid further injury such as second impact syndrome. There are 3 grades of concussions, and only grade 3 involves loss of consciousness. Keep in mind that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a head injury, however, it does not eliminate the risk completely. Read more about the 3 grades of concussions and second impact syndrome here
